Dwight’s Sandwich Recipe from The Walking Dead
I have been thinking about the scene where Dwight, among other things, makes a sandwich to The Jam’s song Town Called Malice. Even with everything that happened during the episode, my biggest takeaway was how delicious that sandwich looked.
So, I decided to rewatch the opening scene and go out and grab the ingredients.
Please note that I am not a chef or photographer so apologies for the crappy egg and photos, but I can assure you that the flavour is there and the sandwich is delish!
What you will need:
- 2 slices bread (preferably the traditional homemade style)
- 2 free-range eggs
- sliced sweet pickles (I used bread and butter pickles)
- A mild mustard (I used Heinz American mustard + see note)
- 2 thick tomato slices (preferably vine-ripened)
- 1 leaf of iceberg lettuce
- 1 teaspoon oil or butter for frying eggs (optional)
- salt & pepper to taste
note: Do not use English or hot mustards like that. I tried and it was not fun. Also, a sweet mustard will work but gets a little overkill with the sweet pickles.
Grab your pan, turn the heat to high until it is hot, then turn down to medium. Crack the eggs into the pan side by side.
While the eggs are cooking, take your bread and spread the mustard on both sides.
then add the pickles,
tomato, salt and pepper and lettuce.
when the eggs are cooked on one side fold one egg onto the other.
Continue cooking until the bottom has a nice colour and flip doing the same thing on the opposite side.
In the show, Dwight cooks both eggs and adds them separately to the sandwich, but I found the sandwich to be a bit more manageable this way.
Place the egg on top of the lettuce and enjoy! Make sure you eat it straight away so the lettuce doesn’t ‘cook’ from the heat of the egg. If you want to take it for lunch, pack the egg, salads and bread separately and then put it together when you are ready to eat.
