Fresh Off The Boat Premiere, Taiwan Gives Jessica an Unexpected Realisation
In the Fresh Off The Boat premiere for season 3, the Huang’s headed to Taiwan to repair a broken relationship between Louis and his brother Gene. In 2016 watching a TV show where a Taiwanese-American family go to a wedding in Taiwan doesn’t really seem like a big deal, but historically it is. Fresh off the Boat is the first American sitcom to film in the country’s capital of Taipei. “Coming to America” brings the viewer on a mini vacation with the Huangs to see some of the most famous sights Taipei has to offer including the temples, night markets and the streets filled with speciality restaurants.
While Louis and Gene’s sibling rivalry plays out amongst wedding preparations over the course of the episode. The other members of the Huang family are left to their own devices in the bustling city. Jessica is quick to show off her local knowledge and negotiating skills to the boys and when that doesn’t go to plan, she realises that so many years away has left her feeling like a foreigner in the place she grew up.
The Fresh Off The Boat premiere takes us back to the underlying themes of assimilation and feeling out of place, as time in Taipei brings Jessica to the unexpected realisation that she actually misses Orlando. And as much as she misses Taiwan when she is in America, Orlando is her home. Both Louis and Jessica accept that while they feel like they are never completely at home in either place, it is because they now belong to both the eastern and western worlds.
The one downside of the episode is that it does feel slightly rushed at times to get everything in. It would have been nice to see the family have 2 or 3 episodes in Taiwan to allow some more fleshed out storylines for each of the characters. But all in all, definitely glad to have Fresh off the Boat back as it is one of the strongest family comedies currently on television.
We see why Jessica misses Taiwan so damn much explained by an airport customs ‘reason for visit’ form.
Eddie finally gets his first pair of Air Jordans…well, sort of.
And Evans adorable red ‘mommy’ flag on a stick for when he gets lost in the crowd.
