Blame! Movie Adaptation Coming to Netflix Original in 2017
update: Feb 24th – Release date
Kodansha Comics has recently announced that Tsutomu Nihei’s Blame! manga that ran from 1996-2003 is being adapted into a movie by Netflix under the originals banner. This will be the second time Netflix has picked up Tsutomu Nihei’s work, the first being Knights of Sidonia. A post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi epic about the human race trying to survive the threat of an alien race known as Gauna.
The Blame! movie is a sci-fi dystopian set in the distant future where humanity has reached a net-based form. An infection in the past has caused the systems to spiral out of control resulting in a multi-level city that constantly replicates itself in all directions.
With humanity locked out of the controls, they are hunted down by the cities protection system known as the Safeguard. Dwindling food supplies and the constant threat of the safeguard has caused a small corner of the city known as the Electro-Fisheries to face starvation and possible extinction.
With the threat of extinction looming, Zuru, a girl from the Electro Fisheries sets out to find food for her village. Her journey sets of the cities alarm and the safeguards kill her travelling companions. She believes death is imminent until Killy the wanderer arrives. A man on a quest to restore the world to order.
The movie adaptation will be directed Hiroyuki Seshita. Hiroyuki’s previous directorial works include Ajin and Nihei’s other work Knights of Sidonia. The Knights of Sidonia team, including animation production company Polygon Pictures, will reunite under the supervision of the mangaka to once again delight audiences.
New character design sketches were revealed for the upcoming Blame! movie by the creator and director at the recent San Diego Comic-Con Spotlight that differ from the original manga. Nihei explained that he did not have the skill to draw the characters the way he wanted to back then (Source: ANN). Designs Below
The Blame! twitter account posted today (Feb 5th) that the project was 90% complete pointing to the release coming sooner rather than later.
