Sherlock Series 4 Trailer Hints At Ghosts From The Past

Sherlock series 4 has certainly taken a dark turn as things get real for Sherlock, Watson and the crew.  Co-creators Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss stated earlier this year that Sherlock series 4 will be “Climactic”, and by the looks of the trailer. They were not just hyping it up. Watch below.

Plots and Villains

It is clear from the trailer that this season will be more dark and action packed. The episodes are called “The Six Thatchers, “The Lying Detective” & “The Final Problem” with the first two stories have been confirmed as The Adventure of the Six NapoleonsThe Adventure of the Dying Detective. The final episode story has yet to be confirmed. Mark Gatiss, Amanda Abbington and Benedict Cumberbatch also dropped three name clues at the recent Comic-Con.

The other major unknown that is expected to be revealed this series is “what happened to the other one”, referring to Sherlock and Mycroft’s brother Sherrinford (named above). Mark Gatiss aka the master of cryptic fan trolling posted a photo on his twitter leading to speculation that Tom Hiddleston will be playing Sherlock’s brother. However Hiddleston has been busy filming Thor and was at Comic-Con for Kong: Skull Island. But the term ‘Blud’ is the British slang version of brother or bro.

The trailer also shows a more detailed look at Toby Jones as Culverton Smith. A man with a mad scientist laugh that wants to have “endless fun” with Sherlock.

The other villain and fan favourite, Jim Moriarty features prevalently in the trailer asking “Did you miss me?”. A throwback to series 3. It also shows a new clip of the back of someone, looking very much like Moriarty. We don’t yet know if he will be back but one can hope. Gatiss and Moffat have said on numerous occasions that Moriarty is dead. But we also know they love to wind up Sherlock fans.

Oh and Sherlock also has a dog now. A Bloodhound to be exact.

Release and Future

Sherlock series 4 will be airing on the 1st of January 2017 with a new episode called “The Six Thatchers” (updated 28th October, via Cinemablend). The second and third season aired on the 1st of January. While it is exciting that the team are starting to officially release updates more regularly. The bad news is that Sherlock series 4 could be the last. In an interview with The Telegraph Steve Moffat questioned if the series could continue saying “I don’t know how long we can keep it going. I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be.”

This does not mean it will be the last. But with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in such high demand it would not be surprising.
